Common Core in kindergarten

RES kindergarten students are learning about ways to identify the main topic and retell key details of an informational text. In this video, two kindergartners are doing a "picture walk" through a nonfiction book about letter carriers. They are pointing out key details to each other with their voices and hands.

The students are working toward Common Core Standard for Reading Informational Text #2 for kindergartners: "With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of the text."   Kindergarten teacher Ileen Gilbar and library media specialist Beth Redford developed this series of lessons after a course they took this summer on reading instruction and the Common Core standards.
