Fourth Grade Enrichment Library Classes: Digital Images and Creative Commons Licensing

Spaceship by Luke is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.

In their Enrichment Library Classes this week, fourth graders have been creating digital images and sharing them on the Internet with Creative Commons licenses. They have been using the WordFoto app on iPads and iPods to take pictures, then altering them to include words (see the "Spaceship" example above). Once they have created these pieces of digital artwork, they have shared them on our blog ThinkCreateCollaborate. Each student has picked a Creative Commons License for his or her artwork using the Creative Commons License Chooser.

We have four goals for this unit:

Students will know how to take and alter photos with the WordFoto app.

Students will understand that images on the Internet belong to someone.

Students will understand that some images on the Internet can be reused because their owners have given permission (licensing).

Students will know one way to license their digital photographs for reuse on the Internet.

This unit is part of our overall instruction on digital citizenship. The students will be sharing more images on ThinkCreateCollaborate over the next few weeks, so please take a look! We've been impressed with both their creativity and their understanding about ownership of materials on the Internet.
