Second graders at RES are starting a unit on folktales. They are learning that folktales are stories from around the world that have been told over and over again for hundreds of years.
Students are also asking the questions: What can we tell about the climate and geography of a country from its folktales? What evidence in the words and illustrations tells us if a country is hot or cold, desert or mountains?
This week's folktale was One Grain of Rice, retold and illustrated by Demi. The students enjoyed this story from India about a girl who outwits her ruler and saves her people because she is good at math!
